Visual Elements Users Directly Engage With

The visual representation of the UI (User Interface) of a digital product is what the end-user will see and use (the LINK). It consists of the following elements: buttons and icons, typefaces, colour schemes and layouts, forms, and interactive elements. The UX determines how users interact with a product, whereas the UI determines what it looks and feels like in practice (the LOOK).

When designing an effective UI, it is important to balance both the aesthetics of the product and its functional use. Consistency in visuals, spacing within the interface, contrast between elements, and clarity of the design all help guide users in knowing how to complete their desired task.

Designers work to create visual hierarchy, designing the interface to visually highlight more important items while still being able to see the less important items of the interface. Designers also focus on making their interfaces accessible to all users, as well as users from diverse backgrounds and devices.

For a business, the UI has a direct impact on creating a positive image of the company, building trust, and building brand recognition. Users form an opinion of a digital product within a matter of seconds, and this perception is largely influenced by the UI. Thoughtfully designed UI enhances the overall quality of the UX by reinforcing trust, clarity, and ease of use—translating the function of a digital product into an engaging and intuitive experience.
