Structuring Content for Usability

The focus of Information Architecture (IA) is to help users have a simple and easy-to-use experience when trying to locate content on your website, mobile app, or within any type of digital system.

An important aspect of IA is the way that digital content is organised, labelled, grouped, and shown or displayed on various digital platforms (websites, applications, etc.).

A well-designed IA significantly reduces the user's cognitive load in that it enhances the user's experience; navigating through your site and/or application will seem logical rather than overwhelming.

The ways that IA facilitates ease of use include creating a user flow definition, mapping the hierarchy of content, designing navigation menus, and determining the relationship between all pages or datasets.

IA is created based on extensive user research, giving teams the understanding of how the users think, the terminology they know, and how they will logically navigate through the steps needed to accomplish tasks.

With a strong IA, you can provide users access to complex data easily. E-commerce sites must use clearly defined categories, filtering options, and groupings of products to allow customers to navigate smoothly through the e-commerce process. On the other hand, enterprise software must also provide users with a dashboard view of their content, have a well-organised menu structure, and provide the user with clearly defined pathways to the required key features.
