Understanding Emergent Behavior in Complex AI Systems
Emergent behaviour is the term used to describe the unpredictable or unintended actions that emerge when there is an interaction between multiple components in complex systems, such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems. AI systems demonstrate emergent behaviour when there are multiple models, rules, or agents working together; these interactions create unexpected results even though there may have been no direct programming of those results.
Emergent behaviour occurs frequently in types of advanced AI environments that incorporate multi-agent systems, large language models, and autonomous platforms. The components that make up an AI system will typically operate according to relatively simple "let me, the computer, do it" principles. However, when those components are combined into one AI system, their interactions create a level of sophistication or unpredictability.
