What Software Is and How It Powers Digital Systems

Software consists of various software applications, scripts, data, etc., which inform a computer on how it will perform specific actions. As opposed to hardware, which represents the actual parts of a physical device, and whereas hardware provides structure to a device’s design, software is not visible; yet, it guides how the device functions electronically and provides electronic connectivity through the use of logic. Examples include operating systems, mobile, websites, embedded software, enterprise solutions, etc.

As software encompasses both types of software, i.e., system & application, system software consists of these items, e.g., operating systems, drivers, hardware resources, etc., and the term 'application software' encompasses many types of tools, services & software that a user directly utilises, including email, receiving some type of productivity suite (the strongest), or even custom software solutions.

The focus in today’s software development is to create modular, automated processes; host & store data to cloud-based systems; and build an application utilising user experience strategy as the primary framework for development. Therefore, software holds the key to connectedness (electrically), data storage, automated processes, and digitised business transformation in all fields."
