Backend Development Essentials for Modern Applications

Development on the back end includes developing all of the server-side technology used to make modern applications work. While users interact through buttons, displays, and interfaces in the front-end application area, the back-end has all the functionality behind the scenes: data storage, request processing, security enforcement, ensuring the application behaves the way it was designed to behave, and much, much more. The components of back-end development are comprised of the server, database(s), APIs and the core business logic of the product.

By providing users with the ability to request and receive information quickly, accurately and reliably under varying amounts of usage/load, the strength of the back-end effectively supports the front-end user experience. Back-end developers work with programming languages and frameworks, for example, Node.js, Java, Python, .NET, PHP, etc., depending on the type of system architecture and performance requirements.

In addition to providing the core functional requirements of an application, back-end development also includes providing several critical elements of application development, for example, user identities (authentication), security of data (encryption), temporary data store (cache), and interfacing or integrating other companies' websites and systems (integrating third-party services). These additional components/concepts help to create an environment that is secure, scalable, and reliable.
